{"id":28228,"date":"2020-04-15T11:42:31","date_gmt":"2020-04-15T09:42:31","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.euruni.edu\/blog\/?p=28228"},"modified":"2025-02-19T17:39:26","modified_gmt":"2025-02-19T15:39:26","slug":"insights-sustainability","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.euruni.edu\/blog\/insights-sustainability\/","title":{"rendered":"Insights From People and Places Leading the Way in Sustainability"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p>Sustainable Development&nbsp;has been&nbsp;defined by the United Nations&nbsp;as <a href=\"https:\/\/www.euruni.edu\/blog\/what-makes-a-good-csr-report\/\">\u201cdevelopment that meets the needs of the present without compromising the ability of future generations to meet their own needs<\/a>\u201d.&nbsp;To safeguard our planet&nbsp;this approach must be adopted across industries.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Not only that,&nbsp;but&nbsp;ever-increasing&nbsp;numbers of&nbsp;consumers expect&nbsp;brands to solve the challenges facing our world&nbsp;as well as supply the products and experiences they want and need.&nbsp;Students and entrepreneurs&nbsp;who hope to flourish&nbsp;should seek&nbsp;opportunities to solve environmental or social challenges when building&nbsp;their&nbsp;businesses.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Here, we&nbsp;consider&nbsp;the success of&nbsp;three approaches taken in three of the most polluting&nbsp;industries&nbsp;and&nbsp;reflect on the lessons we can learn from the achievements&nbsp;of each.&nbsp;&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>Sustainab<\/strong><strong>le<\/strong><strong>&nbsp;Fashion<\/strong>&nbsp;<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>The&nbsp;fashion&nbsp;industry&nbsp;<a rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" href=\"https:\/\/www.independent.co.uk\/life-style\/fashion\/environment-costs-fast-fashion-pollution-waste-sustainability-a8139386.html\" target=\"_blank\">causes&nbsp;damage to&nbsp;the&nbsp;earth&nbsp;at every stage<\/a>. From the release of chemical&nbsp;textile dyes&nbsp;into rivers&nbsp;to&nbsp;under-worn&nbsp;clothing&nbsp;being discarded&nbsp;in&nbsp;landfill,&nbsp;<a rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" aria-label=\" (opens in a new tab)\" href=\"https:\/\/www.theguardian.com\/fashion\/2019\/jun\/23\/five-ways-fashion-damages-the-planet\" target=\"_blank\">the&nbsp;industry is making a mess of our planet<\/a>. Thankfully,&nbsp;there are myriad initiatives and people addressing the challenges and putting forward practical solutions&nbsp;we can learn from.&nbsp;&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image is-resized\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"1080\" height=\"721\" src=\"https:\/\/www.euruni.edu\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/clothes-hanged-on-clothes-rack-3965545.jpg\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-28234\" style=\"width:756px;height:503px\"\/><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Orsola de Castro&nbsp;has been leading the charge for a more sustainable fashion industry&nbsp;<\/strong>since founding&nbsp;pioneering&nbsp;<a rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" href=\"http:\/\/fashion.telegraph.co.uk\/news-features\/TMG7205477\/Orsola-de-Castro-The-ethical-fashion-designer.html\" target=\"_blank\">upcycled&nbsp;fashion&nbsp;brand From Somewhere<\/a>&nbsp;in&nbsp;1997.&nbsp;In 2006 she&nbsp;co-founded&nbsp;<a rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" href=\"https:\/\/www.britishfashioncouncil.co.uk\/pressreleases\/Estethica-SS14\" target=\"_blank\">Estethica<\/a>&nbsp;with the British Fashion Council&nbsp;to celebrate design excellence and sustainable practices, including the use of&nbsp;fair-trade&nbsp;organic fibers, upcycled and recycled materials.&nbsp;In 2013,&nbsp;Orsola co-founded&nbsp;<a rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" href=\"https:\/\/www.fashionrevolution.org\/resources\/2019-impact\/\" target=\"_blank\">Fashion Revolution<\/a>,&nbsp;a global campaign&nbsp;to revolutionize the industry,&nbsp;to&nbsp;change the way&nbsp;we think about our clothes&nbsp;and&nbsp;the lives of&nbsp;the&nbsp;people who make them.&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Orsola\u2019s&nbsp;forward thinking approach and&nbsp;unceasing dedication&nbsp;to improving the industry she loves is a testament to the positive impact&nbsp;that&nbsp;passion&nbsp;and&nbsp;determination&nbsp;can have.<strong>&nbsp;Over the years she has launched initiatives to instigate change at consumer,&nbsp;design, manufacturing and brand levels, pushing for positive change across the industry<\/strong>.&nbsp;Although&nbsp;they\u2019ve not all&nbsp;been for-profit initiatives,&nbsp;the&nbsp;tenacity&nbsp;and thorough understanding of the issues and stakeholders&nbsp;involved&nbsp;that&nbsp;Orsola demonstrates&nbsp;offers&nbsp;lessons&nbsp;that&nbsp;we can take and&nbsp;apply&nbsp;to&nbsp;business.&nbsp;&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>Sustainable Travel<\/strong><\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>Tourism&nbsp;is not a sustainable pursuit, yet it is fundamental to the global economy.&nbsp;And&nbsp;without travel introducing people to the incredible color, variety and vibrance of life on earth,&nbsp;it is unlikely we&nbsp;would&nbsp;have such&nbsp;a thriving&nbsp;culture of advocacy for&nbsp;the&nbsp;endangered animals, environments and traditions&nbsp;that need our protection.&nbsp;&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Sustainable\u00a0development in travel is not straightforward.\u00a0Well-intentioned\u00a0initiatives need to carefully weigh benefits with impact and\u00a0consider\u00a0people, places and cultures\u00a0to find the best path forward. But one country\u00a0is\u00a0forging ahead when it comes to\u00a0building\u00a0an eco-friendly tourism industry.\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"799\" height=\"533\" src=\"https:\/\/www.euruni.edu\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/5599554848_5d9e16b5b1_c.jpg\" alt=\"costa rica sustainable development\" class=\"wp-image-28235\"\/><figcaption class=\"wp-element-caption\"><em>\u201cPlaya Manuel Antonio\u201d by \u201cMartin Garrido\u201d is licensed under <\/em><a rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" aria-label=\"CC BY 2.0 (opens in a new tab)\" href=\"https:\/\/creativecommons.org\/licenses\/by\/2.0\/\" target=\"_blank\"><em>CC BY 2.0<\/em><\/a><\/figcaption><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p>In&nbsp;September&nbsp;2016 Costa Rica became the first country to&nbsp;<a rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" href=\"https:\/\/sustainabledevelopment.un.org\/memberstates\/costarica\" target=\"_blank\">sign a&nbsp;national pact<\/a>&nbsp;to work towards the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals.&nbsp;<strong>Home to nearly 5% of the world\u2019s&nbsp;biodiversity, this tiny nation&nbsp;has&nbsp;set an example&nbsp;that many other countries have scrambled to follow,&nbsp;protecting it\u2019s incredible natural resources by establishing wildlife reserves and conservation projects,&nbsp;as well as ensuring that the&nbsp;country is safe and comfortable to visit<\/strong>.&nbsp;They\u2019ve made it easy for visitors to embrace sustainable&nbsp;travel&nbsp;by creating certifications that define eco-friendly policies for hotels, B&amp;Bs, hostels&nbsp;and other types of accommodation, while tour companies are ranked using a leaf system&nbsp;\u2013 so eco-conscious&nbsp;travelers&nbsp;can&nbsp;choose the leafiest.&nbsp;&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Their&nbsp;thorough approach to building a sustainable tourism industry&nbsp;means they receive over a million visitors each year and will continue to do so, as protective measures ensure their incomparable natural resources are safeguarded for the future.&nbsp;<strong>Costa Rica has tackled the challenge of sustainability from every angle, ensuring that businesses have standards to reach for, that consumers can make informed decisions&nbsp;and that educational initiatives&nbsp;connect locals and visitors to the natural resources&nbsp;around them<\/strong>,&nbsp;ensuring&nbsp;a&nbsp;legacy of regenerative care.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>Sustainable Fuel&nbsp;<\/strong>&nbsp;<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>Fuel is another&nbsp;major polluting force.&nbsp;The world consumes&nbsp;<a rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" aria-label=\" (opens in a new tab)\" href=\"https:\/\/www.theguardian.com\/environment\/2020\/jan\/22\/worlds-consumption-of-materials-hits-record-100bn-tonnes-a-year\" target=\"_blank\">100.6 billion tonnes of material per year<\/a>&nbsp;and just 8.6% of that is recycled. And it\u2019s been forecasted that&nbsp;usable&nbsp;reserves will run out in the next 50 to 150 years.&nbsp;It\u2019s clear that&nbsp;we need to combat our reliance on virgin materials before there aren\u2019t any left. Innovations&nbsp;that&nbsp;address&nbsp;this crisis in energy and build towards a circular&nbsp;fuel economy&nbsp;will be well placed for success.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Arthur Kay&nbsp;was an architecture student working on the design for a coffee shop&nbsp;when he had his lightbulb moment \u2013 what if waste coffee grounds could be used to power&nbsp;cities, homes and even cars?&nbsp;From that question,&nbsp;Bio Bean was born.&nbsp;&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image is-resized\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"1080\" height=\"719\" src=\"https:\/\/www.euruni.edu\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/caffeine-coffee-cup-mug-134577.jpg\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-28238\" style=\"width:742px;height:494px\"\/><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p><a rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" aria-label=\" (opens in a new tab)\" href=\"https:\/\/www.bio-bean.com\/\" target=\"_blank\">Bio Bean<\/a>&nbsp;collects&nbsp;waste coffee grounds from universities, offices and coffee shops around the UK and turns&nbsp;them into&nbsp;industrial and home&nbsp;fuel&nbsp;products.&nbsp;They\u2019re&nbsp;tackling our reliance on carbon-heavy fuel sources from all angles, whilst <strong>ensuring that 50,000 tons of waste coffee grounds&nbsp;are&nbsp;diverted&nbsp;from landfill, saving 80% of CO2<\/strong> that would&nbsp;otherwise&nbsp;have been&nbsp;released&nbsp;into our atmosphere.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The innovative thinking&nbsp;from which&nbsp;the company&nbsp;was born&nbsp;has remained at the heart of their approach. The&nbsp;two products&nbsp;they have&nbsp;on sale will soon be joined by a host of others as their innovation lab continues to exploit&nbsp;every&nbsp;drop of potential from the waste coffee&nbsp;grounds&nbsp;they collect.&nbsp;&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Bio Bean\u2019s rapid growth&nbsp;provides&nbsp;an inspiring example of the circular economy at work.&nbsp;The&nbsp;curiosity&nbsp;of their founder has remained central to their&nbsp;precise and scientific&nbsp;approach, ensuring that the company maximizes profits and sustainability whilst servicing audiences across the spectrum.&nbsp;&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>Extracting Insights&nbsp;<\/strong><strong>F<\/strong><strong>rom&nbsp;<\/strong><strong>t<\/strong><strong>he&nbsp;<\/strong><strong>Experience<\/strong><strong>&nbsp;and Expertise of Others<\/strong>&nbsp;<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>Here are three&nbsp;lessons from the examples we\u2019ve explored&nbsp;that can be applied&nbsp;to any business venture:&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ol class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li><strong>Identify a problem that you want to solve or one that you can meaningfully solve in relation to your business<\/strong>. Who are the stakeholders that need to be engaged\u00a0for\u00a0you\u00a0to make a\u00a0difference? Targeting\u00a0initiatives\u00a0at each level will ensure you have the biggest possible impact.\u00a0<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>Offer support to your customers, suppliers\u00a0and\u00a0partners to enable them to come on the journey to sustainability with you.<\/strong> Whether it\u2019s guidelines, processes, standards, policies&#8230;\u00a0if you\u00a0can share your solutions with others, your impact will be exponentially larger.\u00a0\u00a0<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>Innovation is not just present at the founding of successful companies<\/strong>. It is a thread that is woven through their core.
