{"id":36319,"date":"2022-06-09T09:00:00","date_gmt":"2022-06-09T07:00:00","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.euruni.edu\/blog\/?p=36319"},"modified":"2022-06-09T09:47:20","modified_gmt":"2022-06-09T07:47:20","slug":"alumni-success-talks-the-rise-of-sustainability-and-esg-in-business","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.euruni.edu\/blog\/alumni-success-talks-the-rise-of-sustainability-and-esg-in-business\/","title":{"rendered":"Alumni Success Talks: The Rise of Sustainability and ESG in Business"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p>In our Success Stories series, we\u2019ve been talking to our <strong>EU Business School alumni<\/strong> about their careers and experience.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>We recently heard from <a href=\"https:\/\/www.linkedin.com\/in\/strangm%C3%BCller-markus-4b443012\/?originalSubdomain=de\"><strong>Markus Strangmueller<\/strong><\/a>, who works in the exciting field of corporate sustainability for Siemens, one of the world&#8217;s largest manufacturing companies.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>In his talk with EU Business School students and alumni, he spoke about the<strong> growing importance of sustainability and Environmental, Social, and Governance (ESG)<\/strong>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>The growing demand for sustainability<\/strong><\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>As Markus has experienced first-hand, there is an <strong>increasing demand for sustainability<\/strong>. It is now not only customers that are holding companies accountable for their environmental impact, but investors and legislators too.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Here are some of the stakeholders that are pushing companies to be more sustainable:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\"><li><strong>Legal requirements: <\/strong>Many legislators are working on legislation that pushes companies towards more environmentally friendly processes.<\/li><li><strong>Customer requirements: <\/strong>B2B customers are encouraging suppliers to show their sustainability engagement by complying with qualifications like Ecovadis and NQC.<\/li><li><strong>Investor requirements: <\/strong>Investors want to focus their portfolios on companies that match ESG criteria.<\/li><li><strong>Employee requirements: <\/strong>By focusing on sustainability, companies can find it easier to attract young talent.<\/li><li><strong>Public opinion: <\/strong>The climate crisis is a key issue across the world and customers expect companies to take responsibility for the impact that they have on the planet.<\/li><\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p>Changing attitudes towards sustainability have been fuelled by the constant information we receive that highlights the influence our actions have on the environment.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>For example,<strong> nine \u2018planetary boundaries\u2019 define different things that people must be kept for the planet habitable<\/strong>:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ol class=\"wp-block-list\" type=\"1\"><li>Climate change*<\/li><li>Novel entities*<\/li><li>Stratospheric ozone depletion<\/li><li>Atmospheric aerosol loading<\/li><li>Ocean acidification<\/li><li>Biogeochemical flows*<\/li><li>Freshwater use<\/li><li>Land-system change*<\/li><li>Biosphere integrity*<\/li><\/ol>\n\n\n\n<p>*These boundaries are currently operating beyond the zone of uncertainty (high risk).<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>Transforming the everyday to create a better tomorrow&nbsp;<\/strong><\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>In order to transform our planet and make a sustainable contribution that will benefit tomorrow\u2019s generations, companies need to make changes.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>According to experts, <strong>six transformations are required in order to achieve the sustainable development goals that have been laid out<\/strong>:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ol class=\"wp-block-list\" type=\"1\"><li>Digital revolution<\/li><li>Human capacity and demography<\/li><li>Consumption and production<\/li><li>Decarbonization and energy<\/li><li>Sustainable cities<\/li><li>Food, biosphere and water<\/li><\/ol>\n\n\n\n<p>Based on these six areas that require transformation, <strong>Siemens portfolio addresses most of them with its business fields digital industries, mobility and smart infrastructure<\/strong>. As the climate crisis continues increase in severity, the company is taking a more active role in striving for change.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Markus explains how at Siemens, <strong>they believe it\u2019s important to take a comprehensive, 360-degree view of sustainability<\/strong>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>This approach is known as the DEGREE framework, which sets clear priorities for sustainability at Siemens.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>D<\/strong>ecarbonization: work on meeting global emissions targets<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>E<\/strong>thics: create a culture of trust, focussing on ethics and data handling.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>G<\/strong>overnance: use state-of-the-art systems for effective and responsible processes.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>R<\/strong>esource efficiency: promote circular processes and dematerialization.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>E<\/strong>quity: foster diversity, inclusion and community development.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>E<\/strong>mployability: enable staff to stay resilient and relevant.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>These sustainability activities are going to be crucial for Siemens in their drive toward<strong>s offering more environmentally friendly products and services<\/strong> to their customers, investors, and the general public.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>It\u2019s not just down to one company<\/strong><\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>Of course, addressing climate issues is not the work of a single company, and sustainability measures must be embedded at all levels in order to make a difference.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Markus believes <strong>the entire value chain needs to work towards its own sustainability standards<\/strong>, and that large companies like Siemens have a responsibility to ensure that their supply chain is as sustainable as possible.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Just two years ago, Siemens introduced their own \u2018ESG risk radar\u2019. This means that, with customer projects undertaken, <strong>the company carries out an automatic evaluation of the potential ESG risks that they could be responsible for<\/strong>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>In these analyses, the firm looks at risks from a location, partner, customer, and regional perspective to ensure that their projects are beneficial to both business and planet.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>Key takeaways from Markus\u2019 presentation<\/strong><\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>The attendees at Markus\u2019 presentation left with an in-depth knowledge of ESG and sustainability means in the modern business world.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Drawing on experiences from his own career working at Siemens,<strong> Markus is passionate about the role of large corporations in combatting climate change<\/strong>. He finished his presentation with three key takeaways that he hoped listeners would obtain from his presentation.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>Sustainability is here to stay<\/strong><\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>Sustainability is not just a trend that people will forget about in a few years. Sustainable development, sustainability and ESG are critical factors\u2013 and they will only increase in importance over the next few years.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>It\u2019s important that students, professors, business professionals, and the general public familiarize themselves with what sustainability means so that they can help make a change.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>The importance of outside-in thinking<\/strong><\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>Traditionally, many companies have focused solely on profits regarding their operations. Nowadays, it is important to<strong> adopt an outside-in approach whereby business professionals consider the outside environment in all of their decision-making<\/strong>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>It\u2019s time to act now!<\/strong><\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>No matter who you are \u2013 whether you\u2019re studying for your degree or you\u2019re the CEO of a company \u2013 <strong>everyone should do what they can to adopt more sustainable practices in their day-to-day lives<\/strong>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Markus urged listeners to reflect on their habits and behaviours and think about how they can affect the environment.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-large\"><a href=\"https:\/\/info.euruni.edu\/info-study-business-europe\/?utm_source=blog&amp;utm_medium=organic&amp;utm_campaign=landing-generic-blog-30&amp;origen=30&amp;campaign=landing-generic-blog-30&amp;utm_mode=30\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"1200\" height=\"338\" src=\"https:\/\/www.euruni.edu\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/banner_cta_1.gif\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-36326\"\/><\/a><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>Making a difference at EU Business School<\/strong><\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>At <strong><a href=\"http:\/\/www.euruni.edu\">EU Business School<\/a><\/strong>, we are acutely aware of the impact business and corporations have on the environment.<br \/><br \/>Therefore we now include sustainability models in many of our <a href=\"https:\/\/www.euruni.edu\/en\/Programs\/programs.html\">course programs<\/a>.
