What is MWC (Mobile World Congress) and why is it so important for Barcelona?

This year the MWC (Mobile World Congress) Barcelona will be celebrating its 20th anniversary. Over the years, the event has transformed from a phone trade show into an important global tech summit.

It’s become an unmissable event for business leaders and tech entrepreneurs, emphasizing the importance of the Mediterranean city on the world stage when it comes to technology, business and innovation.

What is MWC?

Every year, the world’s top tech innovators and industry leaders gather in Barcelona for MWC (previously Mobile World Congress). This exciting event has, over the years, become the world’s leading showcase for the technologies shaping the future of communication.

MWC is where tech trends are predicted, debated and kickstarted. It’s where Google’s Eric Schmidt made the prophetic prediction that everyone would one day carry a “super-computer in their pocket” and where Mark Zuckerberg outlined Facebook’s vision for the future of social interaction. It’s also where new, cutting-edge devices have been unveiled and demonstrated.

The conference has taken place in Barcelona every year since 2006 and will be returning until at least 2030, cementing the city’s reputation as a global technology hub where innovation thrives.

For students at EU Barcelona, having the MWC on their doorstep is an incredible advantage. Studying here means being at the heart of a city that attracts global leaders and entrepreneurs. Events like MWC give our students first-hand exposure to next-generation technology, high-level networking and insights into the future of business.

When is MWC?

This year, the event will take place between the 2nd and 5th of March. Over 109,000 attendees are expected to gather at the Fira de Barcelona for four days of industry talks, keynotes, networking sessions, conferences, insight sessions and product demonstrations.

The event will bring together around 2,900 companies and is projected to generate a record economic impact of €585 million.

What is the theme of MWC 2026?

MWC has a reputation as a forum where foundational tech shifts are debated by prominent thought leaders. This year’s headline theme, ‘The IQ Era,’ covers six thought leadership themes focused on how human insight and artificial intelligence can unite to create positive outcomes for business and society.

Over a packed four days, the conference will highlight the practical applications of AI, robotics and the latest advances in connectivity.

One of the highlights will be the New Frontiers space, dedicated to emerging technologies including AI-driven robotics, quantum computing and non-terrestrial communications.

Hall 2 will also host the immersive “Airport of the Future” experience, showcasing how airports and the wider aviation sector are being transformed by digital innovation.

Who will be attending MWC 2026?

The program will feature top international speakers, including Gwynne Shotwell, President of SpaceX, and Michael Nicolls, Vice President of Engineering at Starlink, alongside other prominent figures from the digital and telecommunications sectors.

Other notable speakers include Aaron Paul, the actor best known for his role in Breaking Bad, who is a passionate digital-wellbeing advocate, and British astronaut Tim Peake.

Of course, many of our students from EU Barcelona will also be attending to hear key insights from these prominent thought leaders, to learn about cutting-edge technologies and to network with attendees.

The conference is an unmissable opportunity for EU students to expand on what they learn in the classroom, particularly in programs such as Artificial Intelligence for BusinessDigital Business Design and Innovation, and our Master in Innovation and Entrepreneurship

Entrepreneurship in the spotlight

As well as attracting the world’s biggest technology companies, MWC is also a magnet for startups and entrepreneurs. Running in parallel with the main event will be 4YFN, the leading platform connecting budding startups, entrepreneurs and investors.

For the second consecutive year, the event will also coincide with Talent Arena, which will feature an expanded program aimed at strengthening the city’s digital talent base.

At EU Business School, our students live and breathe entrepreneurship, which is reflected in our hands-on teaching methods, immersive experiences and several entrepreneurial challenges that take place throughout the year.

The opportunity to hear from and connect with successful start-up leaders and other innovators at MWC is an invaluable experience that can help students consolidate what they learn in the classroom and set them up for success.

Studying in a global business hub like Barcelona means our students have access to other world-class events that shape the future of tech and business, like Integrated Systems Europe (ISE) and Smart City Expo World Congress.

EU Business School also invites renowned global leaders to its own flagship conference series, Learning from Leaders, with former guest speakers from top tech companies including Siemens, Google and Hewlett Packard Enterprise.
